While it is at the expense of Luke Delaney, Thompson's ability to play both tall and small is something which gives the defence added flexibility. He held Eddie Betts quiet in the last meeting between the sides.
"He's a really important part of our defence. He's really versatile and can play a number of roles for us. It's not only the individual traits he brings to our defence, it's the synergy he has with our other key defenders," Brad Scott said in the Interactive Team of the Week.
And Scott says back-to-back six day breaks hasn’t been an issue.
"(They've progressed) really well, probably better than we expected with a short break and interstate travel. The ground was in terrific condition in Hobart, it was nice and soft so in terms of muscles and joints the boys have pulled up really well."
Carlton star midfielder Marc Murphy might be in doubt, but Scott says the Roos will plan for him to play.
"If he plays he'll be underdone so it'll be up to our guys to make sure he's in for a torrid time."
