It seems hard to fathom but just five years ago, North Melbourne had one of the most significant days in its rich history.

After 138 years of tradition, the AFL sought to move the club to the Gold Coast and revamp the competition.

At Dallas Brooks Hall thousands gathered to witness James Brayshaw vow to lead the Kangaroos into a bold new era and secure a long-term future in Melbourne.

In the days leading up to the 6th of December, 2007, the AFL had removed a 12-month ‘grace period’ for the relocation, meaning the North board was forced to decide.

Two key resolutions were made; for the club to stay in Melbourne and for the new chairman to be none other than James Brayshaw.

It set into motion a chain of events that now has North looking at a prosperous future.

Here are just some of Brayshaw's quotes from that night:

“I think it is a matter of course that the club will go back to being called North Melbourne. As far as I am concerned it is the North Melbourne Football Club.

"A part of the AFL deal is that we completely hand the keys over and it's owned and run by the AFL. There's no North Melbourne Football Club in that.

“No-one attached to the club is saying this is going to be an easy 12 to 18 months or five or 10 years. But having said that, I think we've got to change fundamentally how we go about running the footy club.”

And that is exactly what has happened. Since then, the club has been returned to its members, record membership numbers have been achieved, a state-of-the-art $15 million training facility was built, an oval redevelopment is currently being undertaken, the playing list has been regenerated, record profits reached, debt has been reduced by more than $1 million and much, much more.

Much of this would not have been possible without the club's incredible supporters, who rallied in numbers and have helped the Kangaroos build a solid foundation for the long-term.

What do you think of the efforts of the club in the last five years, and what do you think the next step is?
