AFL UMPIRES boss Jeff Gieschen says West Coast players are doing what footballers have always done - accentuating the infringement when they believe they deserve a free kick.

Gieschen was responding to questions on the It's Your Call segment on AFL.com.au when he said that players have always played up in the back or high contact infringements.

"Players have [always accentuated infringements] down through the ages - whether it's a push in the back or a chop in the arms or a high contact," he said

"We see the players often let the umpire know that they've been infringed."

After watching film of several incidents after which Eagles players were paid free kicks during Sunday's victory over North Melbourne, Gieschen said the umpire was correct in each instance to pay a free kick for high contact.

"We're comfortable with those, but we understand the outcry over what the Eagles are doing," he said.

"We think in these cases the players have all been paid free kicks because they were tackled high.

"Yes, the players might have moved a little bit, but the players with the football are entitled to try to break the tackle."
