The Crows are the best kick-in team in the competition, more than two goals clear of the second-ranked side.
Team | Points from kick-ins |
Adelaide | 127 |
Hawthorn | 112 |
West Coast | 105 |
Adelaide’s ability to hurt sides from kick-ins ties in with its strong performance in scoring shots from its defensive half.
In Round 9, more than a third of the Crows’ total score (6.7 out of 18.17) started from the defensive 50. This wasn’t an aberration. Over the entire season they rank second in the AFL for score launches from defensive 50.
Team | Score launches from defensive 50 (%) |
Adelaide | 20.6 |
AFL average | 17.1 |
Differential | +3.5 |
However it is very much a high-risk, high-reward strategy for Adelaide. Brenton Sanderson’s team has conceded the fourth most turnovers in the competition so far this year.
Team | Total turnovers (2013) |
Western Bulldogs | 1260 |
Sydney | 1235 |
Gold Coast | 1225 |
Adelaide | 1213 |
Despite Port Adelaide’s miraculous comeback against Adelaide, the Crows’ last quarter is still their best in terms of point differential.
It’s also far and away Adelaide’s best quarter in terms of outscoring its opponent.
Quarter | Point differential | Outscored opponent |
First | -55 | 6 |
Second | -41 | 9 |
Third | +17 | 6 |
Fourth | +88 | 11 |
Adelaide is the least accurate team from set shots in the competition, converting well below the league average in 2013.
Team | Set shot conversion (%) |
Adelaide | 54.8 |
AFL average | 62 |
Differential | -7.2% |
While the stat is low at this point, the introduction of Lewis Johnston into the team should help to rectify it.
Even though Johnston has only played four AFL games, his set shot technique could arguably already be described as elite. Against the Power, he had four set shots for four goals and didn’t look like missing.
North will have to be wary of the ball coming into Johnston and his fellow tall forwards, however the stats suggest it won’t have to worry as much for scores starting inside Adelaide’s forward 50.
Adelaide has the least percentage of score launches from inside 50.
Team | Score launches from forward 50 (%) |
Adelaide | 12 |
AFL average | 18.7 |
Differential | -6.7% |
However, the form book tends to go out the window at times when teams travel interstate. It all sets up for an intriguing clash in one of the final ever games at AAMI Stadium.
