2013 in review: June
A dual milestone game started North Melbourne's month of June.
In a marathon half an hour media conference celebrating the two milestones, the duo were highly complementary of one another.
"When I first came to the club as a young kid, Brent would have been 23 or 24 and just starting to hit his straps as a big time player back then, and he's just continued it ever since," Wells said of Harvey.
The veteran spoke highly of his younger team-mate.
"I can promise you, my dealings with Daniel and the way he conducts himself around the football club, not only his football ability but the way he treats people and the respect he's got for our footy club, he certainly deserved that number two pick, Harvey said.
"You've got to remember, he's won a best and fairest, he's playing his 200th game this week. If he was no good at football he certainly wouldn't have lasted 200 games. We think he's doing a pretty good job.β
The milestone went according to plan as St Kilda was blown away with a nine-goal first quarter. It was smooth sailing from there as North cruised to a comfortable 68-point victory.
With the mid-season bye approaching, the Kangaroos travelled to Metricon Stadium to face Gold Coast. In the teamsβ previous meeting, Brad Scottβs team had perhaps been a little lucky to escape with a seven-point victory.
Despite the presence of Cameron Ling in the rooms pre-game as part of Channel 7βs coverage, North again slumped to a disappointing loss. In the rain, Gold Coast had 25 of the last 29 scoring shots of the game, turning a 31-point deficit into a 15-point victory.
A week off allowed the players to take stock of a 4-7 record at the half-way point of the season. However things didnβt get any easier after the bye, with a second trip to Patersons Stadium on the cards.
Fremantle was waiting and on a wet Sunday it was able to play the game on its terms from start to finish. In perhaps the most disappointing performance of the season, North never seriously challenged.
The end result was a season low score of 4.5.29 and a 38-point loss, dropping the Kangaroos to 4-8 and a long shot for a second successive finals berth.
Ryan Crowley and Brent Harveyβs match-up was the topic of much of the post-match discussion, with the Docker found guilty of pinching his opponent.
To finish June, North faced Greater Western Sydney at Etihad Stadium. The match against the Giants was the perfect tonic for the Roos; they were never challenged from start to finish in an 86-point win.
