His composure playing across half-back and through the midfield was a big factor in the Roosters’ win over the Cats in Saturday's curtain-raiser at Simonds Stadium.
"It was pretty comfortable actually, despite the heat," Wilkins told NMFC.com.au in the rooms after the game.
"It was good to get out there and have another run."
Development coach Josh Drummond said Wilkins’ ability to read the play and go about playing his natural game in trying conditions was encouraging.
"He was very composed and cool under pressure. His positioning behind the ball was very good.
"He did some good things last week but he backed it up this week and improved as well."
Off-season shoulder surgery interrupted Wilkins’ first summer at Aegis Park, but he's delighted to be back out on the field on the cusp of the season.
"It’s really important (to be playing at this time of year), mainly to get touch back and your confidence back.
"The last 12 months I've probably played about a dozen games, so not too many obviously.
"Not worrying about my shoulder gives me the confidence to go out and attack the ball, lay some tackles and do the team things."
During his recovery, Wilkins wasn't alone. He looked up to tough-nut midfielder Leigh Adams who could share his experiences.
"It was really good to have Patch there helping me out with the rehab. He’s a senior bloke and he’s also got a good knowledge for the game. He gets you on track really quickly."
With one more practice match for Wilkins and North Ballarat before the home and away season begins, preparation is paramount.
“During the trial games I’ll work on my fitness and touch. Once the season starts I’ll work on getting the kilometres up. If I can continue to work really hard on my game I'd love to push to play (AFL) at some stage this year, but I know I have a lot of work to do."
