Stats & Facts: Melbourne
North Melbourne faces Melbourne for the first time this season on Saturday.
NMFC.com.au presents stats and facts relating to the two sides.
• Melbourne is one of four sides North has scored 200 or more points against in a match.
The 31.14.200 scored against the Demons came in Round 14 of 1990. It is a notable day not only for the high team score but also because of John Longmire’s individual performance.
His 14 goals still stands as the most any individual has ever kicked in one game for North, beating his 12 against Richmond in the same season and Wayne Carey’s 11, also against Melbourne, in 1996.
• North has never lost to Melbourne at Etihad Stadium.
In the six meetings between the sides at the ground, North’s average winning margin has been 41.3 points, with only one match having an end result of less than 26 points.
In the most recent game, Round 18 of 2012, Andrew Swallow collected the three Brownlow votes for 32 possessions and an incredible 17 tackles.
• North currently possesses a 10-game winning streak against the Demons.
A win on Saturday will move the current streak into outright second position in club history.
It still has a fair way to go to catch the all-time record of 16, which is coincidentally also against Melbourne (1976-1984).
• In the last 10 games between the sides to end with a single figure margin, North has won eight encounters.
Perhaps recent history makes up for an extremely unlucky stretch between 1965 and 1970. North lost six games to the Demons in that time period, all of which were by less than 10 points.
• North’s biggest discrepancy between behinds and goals in a game came against Melbourne in 1967.
Despite having 27 scoring shots, North kicked 5.22 on a July afternoon at the MCG. Remarkably it still almost won, battling back from a 26-point half time deficit to lose by three.
• Early in its VFL/AFL days, North’s highest ever score to that point was kicked in a match against Melbourne.
In Round 3 of 1926, North’s second VFL season, it kicked 14.5.89 at the MCG. It stood for just over a year until it amassed a score of 20.13.133 against Hawthorn in Round 4 of 1927.
