If there was one player responsible for swinging Sunday’s match in North Melbourne’s favour it was Daniel Wells, and during the third term it seemed he could do no wrong.

With the margin at 17-points and just under six minutes remaining in the premiership quarter, he pounced on the ball across half-back.

Racing towards the centre circle Wells eyed Lindsay Thomas running into the forward 50 and bombed his kick into space. The forward and his opponent gave chase, jostling for position as the ball continued to run.

Thomas’ shepherd was telling, but nobody expected Wells’ kick from beyond the half-way mark to travel over the goal-line for one of the longest, if not most exciting goals of 2013.

Wells has been nominated for the British Paints Goal of the Year, alongside the Cats’ Steven Motlop and Fremantle’s Hayden Ballantyne for Round 20.
