Andrew Swallow, Jack Ziebell and Ben Cunnington do the majority of heavy lifting at the bottom of the packs and led the club in average clearances per game in 2013. With Dal Santo joining the likes of Daniel Wells and Brent Harvey on the outside, the question is bound to be; who will be tagged?
Most teams deploy one run-with player against North but may now have to consider using two.
So we've covered some of the Roos' top inside and outside players, but what about their highest possession winners in 2013, Ryan Bastinac and Sam Gibson?
The on-field chemistry for North is already tantalising considering Dal Santo's history.
From 2009 to 2011, the former Saint achieved career highs in total possessions during an era of success when he was surrounded by star ball users Lenny Hayes, Brendon Goddard, Leigh Montagna and Sam Fisher.
However his numbers have dipped slightly in recent seasons, coinciding with the Saints' list rebuild.
With North's rebuild further advanced and the club on the verge of a sustained period of success, Dal Santo should help rectify a concerning trend in North's losses; its disposal going inside forward 50.
In wins North was able to retain possession with its disposal inside 50 quite well. However as the table below shows, it dropped off in losses.
Result of kick inside 50 | Retained possession % | Lost possession % |
Wins | 55 | 34 |
Losses | 46.9 | 43.5 |
Differential | +8.1% | -9.5% |
The numbers above are relevant to Dal Santo's possible role at North. Over the course of a season where St Kilda only won five games, the Saints scored from half of Dal Santo's kicks inside 50 during 2013.
It's an extremely high number when you take into account the Saints' trouble scoring when delivered by anyone except the left footer.
2013 | From Dal Santo possession | Without Dal Santo possession | Differential |
Scores from inside 50% | 50 | 41.2 | +8.8% |
With the addition of Leigh Tudor, North will be able to gain a strong understanding of the defensive structures which made St Kilda and Sydney such formidable sides to play against.
