Being one of the fittest and best runners in the team means nothing when altitude training is involved, as Ryan Bastinac has found out in recent years.

The 22-year-old has struggled with the different environment in Utah, but is confident it won't have a negative impact on his preparation.  In the past he's had to use oxygen at night to help him deal with the conditions.

"It's been a lot better this time. They've (conditioning staff) eased me into it again and I've been on some medication that helps with the altitude sickness, so far so good," Bastinac told NMFC.com.au.

"I'm naturally fit which is a bonus for me and I can pick up all the fitness pretty quickly. As long as I'm trying to do everything, it will help me for the long road."

Following a long, gruelling session the previous day, there was some respite with a break from running on Tuesday.

"Today was a lot of touch, a lot of kicks and handballs, so that's what the boys look forward to most."

Bastinac says a tenth-place finish this season was far from satisfactory and says the Roos are desperate to get back out on the field.

"There's a lot of excitement about the group. We've got Nick Dal Santo, Robbie Nahas and they're great additions to the playing group. They will help us in 2014 and a lot of the young guys coming through are going to help us as well.

"The playing group's really tight, which is what we need. It's really healthy to have 46 blokes all on the same page and getting along. This camp helps with that heaps."

Bastinac is particularly enjoying training alongside former Saint Dal Santo.

"He's been a massive player I've watched, even when I was a junior playing coming through the ranks. I had to play on him last year for stints which was good as well. He's a great player and he's going to be a great player for North Melbourne."

On Wednesday (Utah time) the players will travel to Brigham Young University for skills and weights.
