2013 in review: July
The morale boosting win over the GWS Giants carried over into North Melbourne’s next game.
Coming up against a rampant Richmond side, the Kangaroos turned in perhaps their best four-quarter performance of the season up until that point to win by 62 points. Winning all four quarters, the game was highlighted by a devastating eight unanswered goals in the second term.
The man entrusted with the pre-game music during 2013 was Jack Ziebell. Calling the job ‘a lot of pressure’, he expanded on what types of songs were on the playlist.
"There's a balance. It varies from a bit of chill-out music, like Jack Johnson, through RnB, a bit of pop and a bit of house,” he revealed.
"There's a couple of old blokes in the side like Boomer and Drewy, they've got to listen to some old stuff."
A trip to the Gabba beckoned to face a Brisbane side full of confidence at home. A typically fast start was again the result for North, but a host of niggling injuries crippled the team’s run and carry.
Aaron Mullett, Robbie Tarrant and Andrew Swallow all required treatment at various stages, while Lachlan Hansen was substituted in the opening minutes of the game with concussion. It all led to a fast-finishing Lions outfit kicking 10 of the last 13 goals to win by 12 points.
A six day break coming off the interstate trip made for a tough task as North prepared for its first Friday night fixture of the season.
Mick Malthouse, in his first year at Carlton, was a coach Brad Scott had never been able to defeat.
Scott had his coaching apprenticeship at Collingwood at Malthouse, with the two sharing a close relationship.
The game played out almost in reverse when compared to the majority of North’s 2013 season. Falling behind by 35 points midway through the third quarter, the game looked over.
However two late goals to Lindsay Thomas and Jack Ziebell pulled the deficit back to a manageable 21 points at the final. A further six goals to two in the final term left North behind by a solitary point.
When Brent Harvey had just a bouncing ball between him and a game winning goal, it seemed inevitable that the Kangaroos were on their way to a stirring victory. But the Sherrin took a cruel bounce, eluding the 350-gamer and giving the four points to Carlton.
To finish July, North faced Melbourne at Etihad Stadium in a rare away game at the venue. After a lacklustre first half, the Roos clicked into gear after the long break.
16 goals to just one was the catalyst for a staggering 122-point victory, providing a nice boost to the percentage.
