The 201cm ruckman was named in the 25-man squad to take on Port Adelaide and was tantalisingly close to selection, but will miss the next six weeks after doing significant damage in the first five minutes of Werribee's match against Geelong.
"Daniel has a grade three rupture of the ulnar collateral ligament of his left thumb," North Director of Medical Services Steve Saunders told NMFC.com.au.
As a result, Currie had surgery on Monday afternoon.
"We'll need to see how the surgery pans out and how he progresses from there but It's looking like he'll be out for around six weeks."
Despite the frustration of missing weeks of match practice, Saunders said there are positives for the 24-year old who can still do a considerable amount of work while his thumb heals.
"Most of his training load won't need to be limited. He obviously won't be catching balls for a few weeks or doing any tackling and that sort of thing, but he can still do a lot of running as well as the strength development work once the wound has settled.
"We can do a lot of things to keep him in great shape so that as soon as his thumb is settled and healed from the surgery, he'll be ready to play."
Meanwhile Sam Wright and Aaron Black both suffered heavy knocks in the Roos' win over Port Adelaide but they have pulled up well according to Saunders.
"Sam got a kick to the outside of his knee in the second quarter. His training will be modified throughout the week but he should be fine.
"Aaron had a knock to the side of the hip but moved really well today, it was surprising how well he's pulled up. He's fine."
Tom Curran is making a strong recovery from his foot operation and will return to the Moon Boot he became so familiar with last year.
"Tommy's doing really well after surgery. The operation went exceptionally well which we're very happy with and he'll soon start his rehabilitation process again, which he knows all too well."
First year player Taylor Garner will be back on the training track this week following his ankle injury.
"He's tracking really nicely and should complete main skills on Wednesday and will be available to play this week."
