Play your role and the time will come. That’s the message that has driven Brad McKenzie so far this year, and on Sunday he got his chance.

With 12 possessions and 5 marks from just 35 minutes of game time, the youngster did plenty to suggest he can keep his spot.

“I knew where I was meant to be, I knew where I had to run. I knew how to get myself involved so I think that made a massive difference to last year,” McKenzie told NMFC.com.au of his first senior outing in 2013.

The 20-year-old came on as a substitute after being called upon as a late inclusion. He was desperate to make a mark.

“Brad (Scott) just expected me to impact the game when I came on. That comes with playing your role, and if I did that I’d find the ball.”

For McKenzie, taking the field midway through the third quarter was a challenge, but one he relished.

“It’s just about preparation really. You never know if there’s going to be an injury in the first quarter or in the third quarter,” he added.

“I was just keeping myself warm and keeping myself focused while being on the bench, and it just felt like I’d sort of been playing for the rest of the game.”

The first-round draft selection got his first touch early on the wing, and looked more than capable at the level despite playing his first AFL game since Round 8 last year.

“I’ve been swung around a fair bit but I really like the wing. I feel really comfortable in that position.

“I just feel more involved when I’m playing there. There’s certain ways to play it and if you play it right you usually get involved.”

With several experienced players looking ready to come back, McKenzie knows the importance of continuing to perform. Confidence from the coach can only help.

“I spoke to Brad and he just said keep holding your end of the bargain and it’ll come to you.

“I think my kicking’s my main strength. Being able to use the ball well will hopefully create opportunities for the team.

“If I can do that it’s the best way I can stay in the team.”
