The end of Wayne Carey’s time at North Melbourne presented an opportunity for North to acquire its highest ever draft pick.
While Carey had been in exile during 2002, he was still under contract. So when he made his decision to go to Adelaide, the two clubs were forced to deal. Selection 4 was headed North’s way.
However, Carlton’s punishment for exceeding its salary cap changed the situation. The Blues lost picks one and two in the 2002 National Draft.
Pick four suddenly became pick two, and North was delighted to select Daniel Wells from Peel Thunder in the WAFL.
Over the course of the last decade, Wells has become one of the most beloved players at Aegis Park. He’s repaid the faith of the fans by becoming a two-time Syd Barker Medalist and looks set to push on to 250 games and beyond in the near future.
Kris Shore was also part of the Wells-Carey deal but didn’t play a game for North Melbourne. Carey played just 28 games at Adelaide, kicking 56 goals.
