Daniel Wells admits he was left embarrassed after failing to chase an opponent during North’s loss to Carlton.

The midfielder was caught on his heels when Zac Tuohy stormed into an open goal during the last quarter of the Friday night blockbuster.

“Usually when I play my best footy, I’m on my toes and you want to be involved in the play. That one just caught me off a bit and I really let the team down,” Wells explained during Fox Footy’s On The Couch.

“That was the one thing I thought about after the game. We lost by a point and that was a massive goal.”

While Wells responded with a stunning final 10 minutes, it was too little too late.  He said Brad Scott didn’t need to highlight his error in the team’s post-match meeting because he knew immediately what he’d done wrong.

“He didn’t have to (say anything). Even Darren Crocker (assistant coach) who I go through my review with, didn’t have to. I knew straight away.”
In true Wells’ style, the number eight has put the incident behind him and has hit arguably his best form of the season.

He had 25 disposals and kicked two goals against Melbourne, before a four-goal haul against Geelong in one of the club’s best wins of 2013.

Wells admits it’s been a challenge for the club’s leaders to step up with games in the balance, especially after several last-gasp defeats.

“You look at the leaders in the tough times to really step up, and in those times you look at the (Joel) Selwood’s, the Kieran Jack’s, their willingness to get their team over the line is why those teams are first and second and third on the ladder,” he added.

“That’s something we’ve had to work together with and that came from the coaches as well. They sat us down and had a good chat to us and ever since then the boys have worked really hard in trying to respond to it.”
