Ryan Schoenmakers’ season-ending injury was a big blow for Hawthorn, but it won’t make things any easier for North Melbourne; experienced defender Brian Lake is ready to fill the void.

The former Bulldog started the season at VFL level after overcoming a calf injury, but could step straight into an important role on one of the Kangaroos’ big forwards.

“On the MCG against North Melbourne in a big game, it’d be a great one to play my first game for Hawthorn Football Club,” Lake told the Hawks' website.

“I was pretty much ready to go last week, but with match-ups and Matthew Pavlich going out of the (Fremantle) side, I didn’t play.”

The inclusion of the 31-year old as an attacking defender could force a change in thinking for Brad Scott, especially considering Lake averages more marks and disposals against North than all but the two expansion clubs.

“I’ve still been playing in that key defensive post, but also getting into the rotation of having some more time up the ground to get that little bit more match fitness,” Lake said of his time in the VFL.

“That’s the role I’ve got to play, to be able to get up higher and use the ball, you can’t just rely on five defenders to be getting the ball out and setting up the play, all six of us have to contribute.”
