Riding a three-game winning streak heading into Sunday, Hawthorn is in good form and presents a big challenge for North Melbourne.

This week's Scouting Report looks at how and where Hawthorn scores its points from, while also breaking down its defensive efforts.

Points For

1. Hawthorn is the best team in the competition at scoring from stoppages so far in 2013.

Averaging 55 points per game in the first month, the Hawks are far and away the leaders with more than five goals (total) ahead of the next clubs on the list.

However, North has been excellent in limiting its opposition scoring from stoppages. It is the second best in the AFL, allowing just 31.5 points per game.

2. Hawthorn is the second best side in the competition at scoring from its own kick-ins.

With a plethora of highly skilled midfielders and defenders all over the ground, it's no surprise the Hawks can take it from one end to the other without the opposition getting a sniff of possession.

Defensively, North ranks sixth in limiting opposition points from kick-ins.

3. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Lance Franklin and Cyril Rioli are the top two for Hawthorn in score involvements.

Both Franklin and Rioli's score involvements largely originate in the forward half of the ground. Sam Mitchell is the mainstay in midfield while Brent Guerra leads the way from the defensive 50.

Points Against

1. Hawthorn has conceded more points from outside 50 (81) than any other team.

While the accuracy (13.3) indicates the Hawks have been partially unlucky to allow so many long-range bombs, it also shows the opportunity is there for the likes of Aaron Mullett, Daniel Wells and company who have long range ability.  Maybe Scott Thompson can take advantage of his big kick yet again.

North has nine goals from outside 50 in 2013.

2. Hawthorn has only conceded two goals from free kicks, the second lowest in the competition.

On the other side of the coin, North has allowed nine goals from free kicks and is the fourth-worst. However, while it may seem like a team issue, North has only gifted one of those majors in the last fortnight.

3. Hawthorn holds opponents to less time in possession than any other club.

It means Hawthorn's opposition has to be efficient in possession when it does get its hands on the ball. With fewer opportunities to score, logically it will be hard to put a winning score on the board.
