Fixture: Travel
In 2014 many of North Melbourne’s away games are noteworthy events.
It starts in Round 4 with a trip to the SCG. After a redevelopment that begun in 2012, North will be the first opponent for Sydney at its newly completed venue. An increased capacity of 48,000 makes for an intimidating welcome for the travelling team.
It could be the perfect opportunity to break a four-game losing streak at the SCG. The Kangaroos’ last win at the ground was in Glenn Archer’s 250th game in 2004. If Andrew Swallow manages to get back for Round 1, his 150th match could coincide with the fixture.
Just a fortnight later, North travels to Patersons Stadium to play in an ANZAC Day game on Friday night against Fremantle. The annual Len Hall game is a centrepiece of the Dockers’ season and puts the teams in prime-time on Channel 7.
In Round 10, North is part of another first at Simonds Stadium, in the first Friday night game at the venue against Geelong. After two high quality matches between the sides in 2013, it’ll be one of the most keenly anticipated matches of the season.
The very next week sees another trip to Perth, as Brad Scott’s team faces West Coast as part of the state’s celebrations for ‘WA Day’. It’s a day which ‘recognises and commemorates the rich history and diversity of cultures’ in Western Australia.
To add to the celebrations, it’s also the first time North will come up against a legend of the club, Adam Simpson as coach of the opposition.
Round 13 marks the Kangaroos’ first trip to the brand new Adelaide Oval, to face the Crows. The Saturday night game will be televised live on Channel 7.
North’s final away game interstate is a return to an old stomping ground. A fixture at StarTrack Oval (formerly Manuka Oval) against the GWS Giants the first time the Roos have played at the venue since 2006. That season marked the end of an eight-year association with Canberra.
