One key Bomber is likely to face North Melbourne in the season opener but caution is the order of the day for another.

Both Michael Hibberd and Jason Winderlich are on the recovery trail from hamstring injuries suffered in Essendon’s pre-season opener against Gold Coast.

Hibberd is the one likely to play. Speaking to Essendon’s official website, club doctor Bruce Reid was optimistic on his progress.

“For Michael to play it would be at three and a half weeks (after the injury), which is quite normal for a Grade 1 minor hamstring.

“We won’t make that decision until he ticks off top-end speed and everything on Monday after a weekend off. But so far everything’s on track and a fair chance of playing.”

With a lengthy injury history, Winderlich is unlikely to take to Etihad Stadium. It could be a blessing in disguise for North – Winderlich averages more possessions per game against the Roos than any other club.

“Jason has got a very bad history of hamstrings but that’s on his left side. This time it’s a minor one on his right side where he’s only had one hamstring in 2007.

“He could get up but we’ll probably take a more conservative approach even though he’s on track.”

Essendon will also be without Jake Melksham who is suspended for the first two matches while Tom Bellchambers and Alex Browne are out injured.
