NMFC.com.au’s best: Majak Daw, Sam Wright

Story of the game
Despite missing two of its key talls in Dan Currie and Ben Brown, Werribee was able to pull off a brave victory over Geelong.  The match was one of goal kicking streaks with both sides getting on serious runs throughout the afternoon.

The Tigers were fast out of the blocks with the first six majors of the game and led 38 to 3.

Geelong tightened up considerably in the second term and managed to reduce the margin to just six points at the main break. With all the momentum and nine unanswered goals, the Cats surged to a 17 point three-quarter time lead.

But the Tigers weren’t done with and slammed through five goals to one in the final term, which turned out to be just enough to get the points.

Points of interest?
1. Majak Daw was awarded the Damian Drum Medal for his best on ground performance. Forced to carry the ruck load in Currie’s absence, Daw also kicked two critical goals in the fourth term to help secure the win.

“John Lamont isolated Majak in the forward line and it paid dividends. He was able to get on top of his defender and boot two late ones which put us within four points at one stage. It was a real momentum booster and a great move.” – Development Manager Ben Dyer.??

2. Sam Wright played a multi-faceted game that earned him high praise.

“Wrighty was really good. He spent time down back but also played on the wings and used the ball a lot better than last week. He hit targets coming out of the back half.

“When he was on a wing, he was able to get down to help out in defence and provided an outlet making really good use of his running.” - Ben Dyer

3. Tim McGenniss may have kicked the VFL goal of the year.

“Timmy kicked a ripper from right on the boundary. I actually have no idea how he did it, I can’t wait to see the tape. I think it was a reverse torpedo-type kick. It was amazing.” - Ben Dyer

4. McGenniss is starting to evolve into a two-way player.

“Tim was going to play on Josh Caddy which we were really excited about, but then Caddy got the call up to the senior side. He ended up playing on Schroeder, who only had 13 touches, while Timmy had 17 himself.

“He’s starting to lock down on his man, but test his opponent with his offensive side. 17 possessions and a goal was a step in the right direction.” - Ben Dyer

5. After a quiet few weeks and a stinging review on NMFC.com.au last week, Jarred “Bulldog” Moore bounced back in emphatic fashion with 23 hard-earned disposals.

“The dog was good this week. Although at one stage he got a bit hungry and was streaming into the forward 50 alongside Scotty McMahon trying to get on the end of a Mason Wood kick.

“Mason thought better of it though and held onto the footy and chipped it around instead.” - Ben Dyer

6.  Drew Petrie strikes again.

Scott ‘Loose’ McMahon almost played on one leg after a training mishap during the week.

“Scotty had his foot stomped on by Drew Petrie if you’d believe it. But he soldiered on and played very well considering. It was a brave effort by him to get through in the manner he did.

“First Drewy got Daniel Wells, and now he’s injured ‘Loose’." - Ben Dyer

Most likely call-up: Sam Wright, Majak Daw
