Kayne Turner pulled up ‘a bit stiff’ after his debut game for North Melbourne on Saturday afternoon, but the youngest player in the AFL wants more.

A collision with Phil Davis, which saw the Giants’ leader come off second best, and a goal were just a few of the highlights on a big day in Canberra for the 18-year-old.

“I asked Lindsay (Thomas) the night before if he was going to pass me one (a goal) so I was pretty happy with that, he doesn’t normally give them up so I was pretty lucky I think.”

Weighing in at just 73 kilograms and nicknamed ‘Sugar’ (as in Sugar Cane), Turner told 3AW he was helped out a lot by his more experienced team-mates.

“Once I got out there…I felt really at home. All the boys out there were brilliant you know, you’ve got Drew Petrie and Lindsay Thomas and they help you out so much out on the field and Leigh Adams…

“If I was in the wrong spot all day, they’d tell me to go or area I need to be running to. It’s just great to have blokes like that helping you out.”

Turner also felt well supported at Manuka Oval by his family that travelled up for the game and says he plays aggressively due to his brothers’ antics in the backyard.

“I had a few cousins, aunties and uncles who made the trip as well which was good.

“I have three older brothers so they all beat me up. I couldn’t get a kick in footy in the backyard so had to find my own ball somehow. I’ll owe a bit to them eventually.”

Despite having to complete his Year 12 studies over two years at Maribrynong Secondary School, he says he wouldn’t like to see the Draft age lifted to 19.

“I think 18 is a fairly good age to come in. I’ve really enjoyed my first year in the system.

“I like the age as it is, I like the way it is.”

While Brad Scott was pretty fired up at the team at quarter-time, Turner hopes he did enough to impress the head coach.

“Hopefully he’s pretty happy with me.”
