Highly-touted youngster Trent Dumont could pull on a North Melbourne jumper for the first time, after being named in the 29-man squad to take on Hawthorn.

The South Australian was selected with pick 30 in last year’s National Draft, already boasting senior experience with SANFL side Norwood.

He faced a tough initiation at Arden Street, joining his new team-mates in Utah just days after being drafted.

Having worked through a testing pre-season period, Dumont could join Joel Tippett of those who’ve debuted from the 2013 draft class.

Tippett impressed everyone with his performance in shutting down Carlton’s Jarrad Waite last week, and will have another chance to push his case on Friday night.

The mature-age rookie is sure to have a battle on his hands, with the likes of Jack Gunston, David Hale and Jarryd Roughead among his potential match-ups.

Another youngster named for the first time this year is Taylor Garner.

The 19-year-old caught the eye with his ferocious tackling pressure in the final round of last season against Collingwood, and has returned to full fitness following post-season ankle surgery.

Cameron Delaney has also been named in the squad, likely to hold down a spot in defence should he make the final 26.

With just one senior game to his name in 2013, the agile backman will be desperate to make an early impression.

Coming back from a knee injury, Majak Daw will warrant plenty of attention from the Hawks.

North’s number 38 joins Drew Petrie and Daniel Currie as potential key targets in attack.
