Vice-captain Drew Petrie believes the Kangaroos were humiliated by a young Lions’ outfit at the GABBA and says the heat it on to perform against the Hawks on Friday night.

“We did our match review on Monday and we always watch it from behind the goals, we never watch it from the broadcast vision,” he said on the AFL Exchange podcast.

“The vision showed a lot of players not chasing their opponents, just walking behind the play. It’s just lazy, and hoping we can turn the ball over and get out the back. We played hopeful footy.”

The second quarter fadeout was also high on Petrie’s agenda.

“In the first quarter we did the work but didn’t capitalise. We went into quarter time about 18 points up after dominating the whole quarter.

“In the second quarter we just thought things would roll on and we didn’t run from one contest to the next. A lot of their (the Lions’) good young players stood up and showed us up,” Petrie said.

Petrie also backed his coach following a controversial post-match incident with Tom Rockliff.

“He’s very protective and supportive of his players, which is a good thing.”
