North Melbourne has a new secret weapon in its quest for September action, but its path to the AFL hasn't been of the traditional kind.

From the basketball court to the football field, Trevor Gleeson brings a different perspective to the tactical side of the game, assisting the club's coaches at training and on game day.

"For us it has been terrific for our coaching group to tap into a well-respected and successful professional coach from another sport," Chief of Football Donald McDonald told kangaroos.com.au.

Gleeson spent seven seasons at the Townsville Crocodiles and Melbourne Tigers in the NBL, and was named Coach of the Year in 2010/2011.

During his tenure at the Tigers, he formed strong relationships with the club's football staff, with both teams based at Aegis Park.

"It's a great development opportunity that he (Gleeson) was keen to explore."

"Trevor has insights into player management, travel, opposition analysis and game style development that we can utilise."
