Playing for his career

Nathan Grima is out of contract at the end of the season, and is all too aware every game he plays is potentially career-defining.
“It’s definitely a stressful time. The more guys you’ve seen signed up, the more nervous you get,” Grima told SEN’s Morning Glory.
“You’re doing the numbers in your head and thinking there’s only a couple of spots left.”

The key-defender has managed just eight matches this year, and 80 over his career, struggling for a prolonged run in the seniors due to injury.
Nevertheless, coach Brad Scott has been emphatic in his belief North is a better side with him in it.
Looking back, Grima reflected on how his mindset has changed since arriving at Arden Street.
“I came off the rookie list, so if I played one game I was always going to be happy. Then I signed on for a couple of years, and then I had a three year deal so I got pretty comfortable during that period. The last couple (of contracts) have been one year deals.
“Obviously the older you get, you buy more things. I’ve got a house now. If it was to end in four weeks, it’s quite nerve wracking to think what may lie ahead.
“You’re trying to keep it all in perspective and play the best you can, but you know there’s so much at stake.”
Returning from a foot injury, Grima was a strong performer against the Giants in Canberra. He’ll be hoping to continue that form heading into the last three rounds, and a potential finals campaign.
“It’s good to be back playing footy. People were questioning whether I still played or not, so it was good to get back out there with the lads and get a win,” he added.
“If I play well in the following weeks, hopefully I can continue to earn money but more importantly play AFL, keep my house and things like that.”
