Legendary North Melbourne stars, led by former captain Anthony Stevens, will come out of retirement to raise money for the club.

Former greats Anthony Stevens, recently retired Glenn Archer as well as Corey McKernan, Anthony Rock, Leigh Colbert, David King, Ian Fairley and Mick Martyn will dust off the boots and slip them back on for the good of the club.

The former Kangaroo greats, who have collected 12 premiership medals, played more than 2250 games and kicked over 1250 goals between them, will come out of retirement to play in a practice match between Goulburn Valley Football League rivals Benalla and Tatura.

The event is the brainchild of dual Syd Barker Medallist Anthony Stevens.

“Given this region used to be in the club’s zone in the pre-draft days there is a lot of support for the club up here and we decided to get some of the boys together to help keep the club’s momentum going,” Stevens said.

North Melbourne Football Club Chairman James Brayshaw and current Board members Mark Brayshaw and dual Premiership Coach Denis Pagan will attend the festivities if North Melbourne is not competing in NAB Cup Grand Final on the same day.

The practice match including the All-Stars is scheduled to begin at 4pm on Saturday, March 8 at the Benalla Showgrounds, Bridge St, Benalla. Fans will have an opportunity to purchase club membership and merchandise at the game.

“This is a great opportunity for fans of this region to come down and see local football talent mixing with some former champions of the game,” Stevens said.

“It promises to be a great sportsmen’s night after the game and even better if the boys can make it through to the NAB Cup Grand Final as we will have that game on the big screen.”

Entry to the game will be $10 for an adult, $15 for a family, and children will be admitted free. The Sportsmen’s Night will begin at 7pm in the Showground’s Drill Hall with tickets including entertainment and a two-course meal, priced at $50 per person or $90 per double.

Fans can book for the sportsman’s night through Stephen Hickey’s Sports Addiction store in Benalla, or by calling Benalla Football Club Board member, Peter Mangles on 5762 3761 or 0409 947 161.
