In The Mix: Round 4
A tricky start to North Melbourne’s season gets tougher this weekend with a trip to Sydney.
Jamie Macmillan’s fractured fibula means there’s guaranteed to be at least one change.
Have your say on any potential changes in the comments at the bottom of the page.
#4: Liam Anthony
The reason: Anthony’s ability to win the ball in high numbers could be extremely valuable on a ground where every possession is so crucial.
The challenge: After a week off due to the VFL split round, stepping into a high pressure, predominantly contested game against the Swans may be a step too far.
#7: Jack Ziebell
The reason: When fit, the vice-captain is a member of the best 22.
The challenge: The only thing stopping Ziebell from returning to the side is the state of his shoulder. If it’s given the all clear, expect the number seven to be back in the side.
#11: Michael Firrito
The reason: With Macmillan’s injury, an extra big body is needed in the defensive half. In Firrito, the match committee has an experienced veteran in good form after 31 disposals for Werribee.
The challenge: Macmillan tends to push up to a wing and spend a fair bit of time in a defensive role. In recent years we have seen Firrito play exclusively as a defender, so a like-for-like change may be stretching the realms of possibility.
#26: Taylor Hine
The reason: Depending on where the match committee views Hine to be best suited for this weekend, there could be a range of matchups, either as a small defender or lockdown tagger.
The challenge: If Ziebell does come in to strengthen the midfield, in theory, Hine would be taking a defensive spot. The form of Shaun Atley, Aaron Mullett, Luke McDonald and co suggests it is a tough group to break into.
#28: Robin Nahas
The reason: The smaller SCG surface may mean a different forward structure, with fewer tall forwards selected.
The challenge: Both Lindsay Thomas and Leigh Adams are in form, meaning Nahas may have to bide his time at North Ballarat for a little longer.
#32: Mason Wood
The reason: Wood could prove a tricky match up with his size and speed.
The challenge: Handing a player a debut against Sydney at the SCG would be an immense show of faith in Wood’s capabilities, but the safer option may be to wait until the left footer is knocking down the door with a string of solid VFL performances.
#38: Majak Daw
The reason: 17 disposals and 20 hit-outs against the reigning VFL premiers was a good way to start the season. Roaming through the ruck and forward, he provided a target in the attacking 50 while also contributing to Werribee’s clearance work.
The challenge: While strong in patches against Box Hill, Daw did have quiet passages throughout the match. The coaching staff may elect to keep building his form and fitness through Werribee.
#42: Scott McMahon
The reason: Again solid in defence for Werribee, McMahon was the general in the defensive half, organising the back six and repelling Box Hill’s attacks.
The challenge: Firrito may be ahead of him after last week's VFL performance.
