North legend Brent Harvey has called on the AFL to fixture North Melbourne on Good Friday long-term.
The games-record holder told The Herald Sun that the club had done all the heavy lifting and deserved a decent run at making the event a marquee match.
“I think it’s got potential to go a long way,” Harvey said.
“A lot of clubs have their own games – Queen’s Birthday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day – so it’d be good to have something and the Kangaroos have worked so hard.”
North has campaigned for the Good Friday match for almost three decades dating back to the late 80s.
“I think it’s going to be a ripper game and hopefully we don’t have to think about the AFL giving it to someone else,” Harvey added.
Planning has been underway since October last year and Harvey will himself be a key part of the fund raising initiatives on the day.
North Chairman Ben Buckley said the club has had a dual focus.
“We’ve worked very closely with the Bulldogs. It’s about making it a special occasion this Friday,” Buckley said.
“It’s a very important fixture for the footy club. We want to show the AFL that our club can create a marquee fixture, that’s been the principles of our planning.
“More importantly, this is about supporting the Royal Children’s Hospital and helping out and assisting kids with illnesses and families that have some pretty tough times.”
Head coach Brad Scott agrees.
“We have been looking forward to this for a long time, it’s going to be a great occasion … for the AFL in general.
“Games like this really give everyone the opportunity to take stock and have a look at the things that are really important in life.”
