All in the family
CHRIS Scott's appointment as Geelong senior coach means twin brothers will coach against each other for the first time in 2011.
News that he was set to be appointed on Sunday immediately had football fans looking forward to his first encounter with brother Brad when the Cats take on North Melbourne.
The Scotts will become the third set of brothers to coach against each other at the highest level after Kevin Rose (Fitzroy) and Bob Rose (Footscray) in 1975, while Len Smith (Fitzroy) and Norm Smith (Melbourne) came up against each other several times between 1958 and 1962.
Other brothers have coached at senior level but not at the same time.
Bill Eason held the reins at Geelong from 1912-13 while brother Alec took over at Geelong in 1920. Alec also coached Footscray in 1929.
Alan Belcher was captain-coach of Essendon in 1910 but brother Vic had a far more expansive coaching career as the main man at South Melbourne from 1914-15 and 1917 before coaching Fitzroy from 1922-24 and 1926-27.
The idea of brothers in opposing boxes has not been uncommon in recent years as assistant coaching ranks increase.
The Scotts came up against each other several times with Chris as an assistant at Fremantle while Brad did his apprenticeship at Collingwood before taking on the North Melbourne position.
Craig Brittain worked as an assistant coach at the Brisbane Lions in the early part of the decade while older brother Wayne was the head coach at Carlton in 2001-02.
Terry Daniher worked at Essendon, Collingwood, Carlton and St Kilda while younger brother Neale ran the show at Melbourne.
In 2009, Jade Rawlings was senior coach of Richmond and in one match had to plan against younger sibling Brady who was playing for North Melbourne.
Hawthorn assistant coach Ross Smith sat in the box as son Jesse played his career-best game for North Melbourne in the 2007 first semi final.
North Melbourne coach Denis Pagan famously played son Ryan in three senior games for North Melbourne in 2000.
