Story of the game:
In a high quality game, Werribee burst out of the blocks, but went into the first change behind by six points.
“We got off to a really good start and then Essendon pegged us back. They came back pretty hard in the second half of the first quarter,” Senior Development Coach Gavin Brown said.
“It was a little bit the same in each quarter actually. We’d forge ahead and then they’d peg us back and then we just kept surging ahead.”
The Tigers’ seven goal second term proved to be the defining one and they eventually ran out 28-point winners.
“There was some really good footy played. Essendon are a quality team, so it was a really good win by Werribee.”
Points of interest:
1. Majak Daw was the best of North’s representatives on the day.
“He was really good. It was a terrific game for Majak playing predominantly in the ruck and then went forward,” Brown said.
“He had a really big impact in the game, especially in the ruck, but he also took three really strong contested marks and kicked three beautiful goals. He had a big day.”
2. Eric Wallace played his “best game of the year” according to Brown, chiming in with two goals.
“He took some terrific marks, was good at ground level and one of his goals was an inside 50 taking on an opponent in general play.
“He laid some tackles, went in the ruck and did some pretty solid stuff in the ruck. It was a really good day for Eric.”
3. Mason Wood was terrific, with 14 marks for the day to go with 20 possessions.
“His work-rate was really solid and his defence was pretty sound, but it was his aerial stuff that was a bit of a highlight.
“He had 14 marks and a few of those were really strong contested grabs, which is fantastic because that he’s been working really strongly on.”
