The Giants have wasted no time announcing replacements for their injured stars with two new faces set to make their debuts against North Melbourne on Saturday at Spotless Stadium.
Coach Leon Cameron hopes midfielder Jack Steele and defender Caleb Marchbank can fill the void left by Stephen Conilgio (shoulder) and Joel Patfull (ribs).
Replacements for Shane Mumford (ankle) and defender Phil Davis (ankle) have yet to be named.
Steele, 19 from Canberra, and Marchbank, 18 from Benalla, will be the club’s first debutants of the year.
“Bringing in these two young kids that are competitive players, can hopefully help us with that contested ball,” Cameron told the club’s website.
At 187cm and 86kg, Steele is a powerful midfielder/forward.
“Jack will probably play forward and midfield as well, he’s been playing that role at NEAFL level,” said Cameron.
“He’s been playing some tough on-ball footy for probably six or eight weeks now.
Steele was a player North was interested in acquiring during the Academy Bidding process in 2014. The Roos were prepared to give up their first-round pick (15) on the youngster before the Giants secured him with their second-round pick (24).
“He’s a real competitor so really wherever he lines up, it doesn’t matter, you know he’s going to put his head over the footy and tackle really hard and that’s what we want to be known for.”
Taken with pick 6 in the Draft, Marchbank is 194cm and already weighs in at 90kg.
“Caleb’s been playing a key back post for the last eight weeks, whether he’s been that second tall or third tall,” Cameron said.
“He’s a terrific young kid, he’s got a really competitive attitude. He likes to fly for his marks, he spoils really well. He’s very courageous in the air and his performances have been getting better and better.
With North’s tall forwards Drew Petrie, Jarrad Waite and Ben Brown out for redemption after managing just one goal between them against Sydney last week, Marchbank could be set for a baptism of fire when the sides meet.
