Hawthorn has all but ruled itself out of the running to secure Chris Yarran from Carlton after being told that Richmond is his likely destination.
It was reported last week that the Hawks could attempt to lure Yarran away from underneath the Tigers' noses.
But Hawthorn's list and recruiting manager Graham Wright told NAB AFL Trade Radio the Hawks' interest in the 25-year-old has cooled after an initial enquiry.
"We did ask the question about six or seven weeks ago about Chris when we heard that he was looking to move, or Carlton were looking to move him, but we were told then that it looks like it will be Richmond and that was as far as that went," Wright said.
"We haven't spoken to him or his management in the last couple of weeks."
Despite their success in the trade and free agency markets in recent seasons – picking up eventual premiership players Ben McEvoy, Brian Lake and James Frawley – Wright said the Hawks weren't plotting any major swoops this Trade Period.
Hawthorn's salary cap has already squeezed out Matt Suckling, who has become the fifth Hawk lost to free agency after accepting a three-year deal from the Western Bulldogs.
"We put a significant offer to Suckers mid-year and he wanted to explore his options," Wright said.
"I think a couple of things fell over for him at the back end of the year and we'd signed some other players and really didn't have the financial capability to go any further than what we'd offered him a couple of weeks ago.
"So that was disappointing, but you know that's the new environment we're in and players are going to come and go a little bit."
Exciting midfielder Jed Anderson is another Hawk looking elsewhere, with the 21-year-old starved of opportunities this season.
Anderson only played four games, none after round six, and with Hawthorn's ageing midfield still intact he would likely have to fight Will Langford, Billy Hartung and Jonathan O'Rourke for a spot in the best 22 next season.
Anderson has reportedly attracted interest from West Coast and Carlton – coached by former Hawks assistants Adam Simpson and Brendon Bolton – while Essendon are also said to be in the hunt after he requested a trade.
"He's a contracted player for next year and we've been really open and honest with Jed, we understand there's some frustration about him not playing at the moment," Wright said.
"But some of that's been the fact that when Jed was available to be picked this year he was sore in hamstrings and things like that.
"He's requested to have a look and he's spoken to a few clubs and we'll see what happens over the next few days, but if we don't think it suits us we're pretty keen to retain him."
Wright said the Hawks were keen to go to the draft and bring in more youth rather than trade for experience, but didn't rule out getting involved in the player exchange market.
"We've been open where we've said it's time for us to get a bit younger and go to the draft and we've been pretty solid with that all the way through," he said.
"But it doesn't mean we're not open-minded going into this period, depending on what might come up.
"We don't have a lot of money at this stage, so that might limit what we can actually do."
