Mason Wood lays foundations
Mason Wood continued his good VFL form on the weekend with 20 disposals and 8 marks.
Mason Wood, the club’s second pick in last year’s National Draft, continued his good VFL form on the weekend with 20 disposals and 8 marks, mostly across the half-forward line.
“It was probably his best game for the year,” North development coach John Lamont told NMFC.com.au.
“He lead up to the ball well, he presented well and took some marks. He got a bit more involved with the defensive side of the game and laid a few more tackles.”
While he had just one goal to his name, Wood provided several opportunities for his fellow forwards with his precision kicking and tackling pressure in Werribee’s big 89-point win over Coburg.
But despite his progress on the weekend, Lamont believes the youngster still has plenty of room for improvement.
“He’s typical of a first-year player in the VFL, finding his way with the quicker game, the harder game, the more physical game.
“He’s still searching for the consistency that we ultimately need from him.”
Through the middle, Levi Greenwood (18 touches) played a shutdown role on AFL-listed Tiger Sam Lonergan, and his efforts were rewarded by being named among the best.
“When Sam was with Essendon last year against Werribee he dominated. Levi did a really good job… kept him out of the game and he was still able to win some good ball himself.”
There was much interest in how Ayden Kennedy would fare against former team-mate Aaron Edwards, and the defender did a great job keeping his opponent to just one goal.
Jordan Gysberts had one of his better games of the season with 20 disposals and 2 goals.
“He was more focused with his body-work. He’s still adjusting to how we want our midfield to play.
“He’s obviously been at Melbourne for three years and you don’t just click your fingers and have an immediate change, you’ve got to learn and adjust.”
Meanwhile Tim McGenniss impressed yet again, finding plenty of the ball and booting a fine goal from outside 50, while Will Sierakowski finished with 18 quality possessions despite a slow start.
The win moves Werribee to 11th on the VFL ladder, with its next game a Foxtel Cup clash against Queanbeyan at Etihad Stadium on May 28.
