No tall order
“The VFL finals are a chance he (Daniel Currie) gets to press his claims early for a chance next year.”
“Dan’s shown us all year that he’s capable of playing AFL footy,” North Melbourne coach Brad Scott told NMFC.com.au.
“The VFL finals are a chance he gets to press his claims early for a chance next year.”
A Preliminary Final showdown against Box Hill looms for Werribee, and Currie, in the engine room will be vital to the Tigers’ chances.
While Scott admits he’d like to have seen the number 1 debut this season, the chance for regular game-time as a one-out ruckman has been invaluable.
“The fortunate thing for Dan is he’s usually rucking against an AFL-listed ruckman. Last week it was Max Gawn from Melbourne and this week no doubt it will be a Hawthorn-listed ruckman because they’ve got a few down there,” he added.
“It’s a good opportunity to see how he goes against his direct opponent. Most of our guys play against AFL-listed players, but the ruck is one position where you’re directly pitted against an opponent for most of the day and we can gauge Dan’s progress against that.”
Currie’s development has been so impressive that the big man attracted interest from rival clubs before re-signing with North Melbourne in August. Now, he’s eager to repay the faith.
“Obviously it’s a long way away but I’m really excited about what lies ahead for the next few years,” he said.
“To have another big pre-season and really take the opportunity over the pre-season games; hopefully I can get through the rest of this year, hopefully play in a (VFL) premiership and carry that into next year.”
Currie, along with North team-mates Will Sierakowski, Jordan Gysberts and Tim McGenniss will form the nucleus of Werribee’s midfield for Sunday’s clash.
Ayden Kennedy will be pivotal down back, while recently delisted Roo Ben Speight and development coach Jarred Moore will also be in action.
