Champion midfielder Anthony Stevens was officially recognised as a Legend of the North Melbourne Football Club on Friday night.
Stevens arrived at North Melbourne from Waaia, and began his career in 1989 where he played four games in his debut season, wearing the number 58.
1993 was his breakout season, under Denis Pagan. He played 21 games and quickly established himself as a key part of the Roos’ midfield.
Stevens enjoyed the ultimate success as part of North’s 1996 premiership team, collecting 23 disposals kicking two goals.
He won his first Syd Barker Medal in 1998 and was selected in both the Victorian and All-Australian teams in the same year.
He famously played with a badly sprained ankle in the 1999 Grand Final, helping North Melbourne to its fourth premiership.
An inspirational player, with his remarkable courage, Stevens won his second Syd Barker Medal in ’99, and continued to play great football all the way up until his retirement at the end of 2004.
