With the Trade Period currently underway, NMFC.com.au takes a look back at some of North Melbourne's most noteworthy trades since the National Draft was introduced.

1994

In: Glenn Freeborn, pick 55 (Matthew Belleville)
Out: Troy Polak (Fremantle)

The inclusion of Fremantle into the AFL led to a busy 1994 trade period. As the Dockers prepared for their inaugural season, they were allowed to pre-list players in much the same way Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney did in recent years.

One example was Glenn Freeborn. On North’s books it had Troy Polak, originally from Perth and drafted a year earlier with selection 60 in the National Draft.

Polak went to Fremantle and was delisted before the season started, while North received Freeborn and pick 55, Matthew Belleville.

Belleville never played a senior game, and while Freeborn had just 55 to his name, he etched his name into North Melbourne history with his performance in the 1996 Grand Final.

The number 17’s three goals in the second quarter pulled North back into the game as it went on to record its third premiership. His efforts are remembered fondly by all involved with the club.

After four years at Arden St, Freeborn moved onto Collingwood for another five seasons before retiring at the end of 2003.
