It’s been twenty-years since Byron Pickett last saw his 1999 premiership medal, but that’s all about to change.

The former North Melbourne star learned of its whereabouts only this year after fearing he’d never see it again.

“I had a cousin (David) who used to live with us in Melbourne and he passed away a few years ago,” Pickett told The Adelaide Advertiser.

“To this day I didn’t know that I gave my 1998 jumper and 1999 premiership medal to him and he ended up leaving it with his mum - my dad’s sister.

“And she told me that about five or six months ago that she’s got it, I thought they were gone.

“She’s still got it there, I haven’t asked for it back yet, I’ll let her keep it for a little bit and go over maybe later this year and grab it all.”

As for his jumper from that famous win over Carlton, that’s another story.

“My mum and dad put it in a framing shop next to the Glanville pub back in the day, and the shop’s gone and I don’t know where it is,” he said.

“Having the 1998 jumper - I don’t know (it doesn’t mean) as much as the 1999 winning one but yeah.

“After the (1998) game Glenn Archer walked out of the changerooms with his jumper and chucked it in the bin, and a year or two later some guy found it at a rubbish tip.”

At 39, the 204 game player works at Port Adelaide to help deliver its indigenous programs. He has two sons aged 10 and 12 who play at Port Districts and both are part of North’s father/son academy.
