With the draft just a matter of hours away, North Melbourne’s recruiters are cool, calm and collected ahead of what is a recruiter’s night of nights.
Headed by National Recruiting Manager Mark Finnigan, North heads into the draft with five picks, including pick four, its earliest selection since 2006.
Finnigan is confident his team has put in all the work necessary to ensure they select the best available player once their time comes.
“We’ve done all the work, so we’re pretty confident we’ve got the names in the order that we like. It’s just going to a matter of waiting to see who’s there, and call the name out,” Finnigan told NMFC.com.au
“A couple of follow-up calls or checks, but most of the work’s done prior to getting up here (Sydney). It’s sort of a 12 month process so, obviously you cram a little bit in at the end just to make sure you’ve got everything right, but a lot of the work’s done.”
Despite the relative uncertainty of who will be drafted with pick one and the possible repercussions that could have on later picks, Finnigan understands it’s out of his team’s control.
“It does do your head in a little bit. All we can do is put our players that we like in our order, and cross them off as they go.
“I think the reason why it’s a bit of spin is because there is so many great players available, and they’ve all got different attributes that people like, so there’s not going to be a surprise with either number of players going one, two or three.”
