This week, 85 draft hopefuls embark on a series of tests at the NAB AFL Draft Combine with one aim; secure a spot on a playing list come November.
Paddy Dow’s no-nonsense approach to football is one of the many reasons why he could be an early selection at the NAB AFL Draft.
“It’s all pretty overwhelming at the moment," Dow admitted, speaking from the Draft Combine.
“Everyone’s nervous but it’s good to get around and meet all the new boys from all over Australia ... (I'm) excited for the next three to four days.”
Dow’s striking agility paired with his ability to push forward and contribute on the scoreboard is what has him regarded as one of the most consistent and reliable midfielders in this year's crop.
Despite missing the Combine due to surgery on his injured shoulder, the 184 centimetre midfielder is confident he will be back on the field in no time.
“I did it about six weeks ago but just thought of the positives – it’s the end of the season and I didn’t miss any games,” he said.
“The quicker I got it done, the quicker I am back and I can start training again.”
When asked if he thought recruiters had seen enough to keep his dream alive, Dow was optimistic.
“I hope so. I was happy with my last game and that’s when I did it (the shoulder).”
Tenacity and resilience has become a foundation to Dow's game, helping him to the last three best-and-fairest medals at Geelong Grammar and holding him in good stead to pursue his AFL dream.
