There's no denying Wayne Carey's impact stretches far and wide at Arden Street, but so powerful was the 'King's' reign, his influence is still being felt, even throughout the club's AFLW side.
So much so, North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos' vice-captain Brittany Gibson has chosen to wear his famous No.18.
“Being a North supporter my entire life, it was Wayne Carey-inspired,’’ Gibson told North Media.
“Growing up, I used to see him on TV dominating games. I remember the premierships they won when I was probably eight or nine years old, if not younger.”
A lifelong Roos supporter, the 26-year-old revealed a long association with the number.
“For most of my career, aside from last year and early on, I’ve worn the number 18,” she added.
“I was born on the 18th, so I thought of it as an omen. We’ve actually moved our wedding so that it falls on the same date as my partner is also born on the 18th as well.
“Basically, it’s all based around North Melbourne, Wayne Carey and the fact that I was born on that day.
“When I was asked to nominate my preferred number, I had my fingers crossed. I even put the same one three times, so I didn’t give them much of a choice.
“Since coming to North, I’m just ticking off childhood dreams. First being named vice-captain, then obviously getting the number I wanted. I think the next dream is to win a premiership with the number on my back.
“I really take home the sentimental stuff. I want to be a part of North’s history forever.”
In fact many of the players will begin their journeys wearing numbers of great personal significance.
Kaitlyn Ashmore, who forms part of the broader leadership group, has selected No.10, paying homage to her late grandfather.
“My ‘pa’ had a stroke randomly,” Ashmore said.
“I’m still a bit emotional about it. That’s why I wear number 10 on my back.
“Because that was the day he passed away [and] that’s the day I realised I’m going to have a crack at footy,” she told the league's website.
Despite donning No.2 for the bulk of her representative career with the Hockeyroos, accomplished dual sportswoman Georgia Nanscawen will wear 22 in her inaugural AFLW campaign.
The new recruit looking to duplicate her previous sporting success.
“It’s a new chapter in my life, so why not double the number?” she said.
“Double is always better and I plan for it to be double as good. Another option was the number 20, which ‘Carji’ Greeves wore, he was my great, great uncle and won the first Brownlow medal.
“There could be sentiment with that number as well, but I’m going to be the first woman to wear 22 for North Melbourne. Going on with my new personal chapter, as well as one for the club.”
For club captain Emma Kearney, No.9 was an aesthetic choice.
“I really wanted a single digit number,” she said.
“Looking at other number nines in the AFL, it’s held by a lot of respected players. I also think it looks good.”
