As Bob Dylan once sang; the times they are a-changin’. That was the message at the AFL’s annual women’s lunch, an event held to celebrate and inspire women in the industry.
“The AFL is a really mature industry in the male space and a really new thing in the female space,” North Melbourne football operations manager Laura Kane said.
Kane has spent much of her time helping to establish the North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos; the club’s new AFLW side, and knows only too well the challenges women face breaking into a traditionally male dominated arena.
“I’m proud to work with a socially progressive club that thinks about the world around them as well as trying to win premierships on the weekend,” she said.
For Kane, being part of the AFL industry and working at a leading club is about more than just the game.
Kane’s role is expanding rapidly with North growing from one team, to four with the AFLW and VFLW beginning in 2019.
Besides playing an influential role in the running of the operational side of things in the football department at Arden Street, Kane also helped form North Melbourne’s gender equality action plan.
