Not many people could say they spent the day at training with coach Brad Scott or playing locker room cricket with some of North Melbourne’s stars; it was certainly a day to remember for young Jakob Vanderwaal.
The five-year-old, a North supporter from birth, has an inspirational story.
Jakob was born with a cleft lip and palette, which has side-effects that often include difficulties in eating, breathing, speaking and hearing.

Having undergone around ten surgeries in his five years, he visits the Royal Melbourne Children’s Hospital two to three times a month for specialist appointments with otologists, speech pathologists, reconstructive surgeons and respiratory specialists.
For most people having to spend such an extensive amount of time in the hospital could define life, but for the Vanderwaal's it is just a part of the journey to full health.
The family loves venturing out on fishing trips together and for Jakob an ideal day is spent outside - camping, fishing or playing footy.
While watching the youngsters walk onto the Arden Street oval clutching North champion Brent Harvey’s hand and meeting the Roos' current stars, Mr. and Mrs. Vanderwaal chatted with North Media.
“Jakob has been in and out of the hospital his whole life and is due for another major surgery ten days after this Friday’s match,” Mrs Vanderwaal told North Media.
“It means so much to us and to Jakob to be able to come out to North Melbourne.
“So, thank you so much to North Melbourne and also a huge thank you to the Royal Children’s Hospital.”
Keep an eye out for Jakob running out with the team during Friday afternoon's Kick For The Kids match.
