The 100-game milestone is an important moment in any AFL footballer’s career, and for Luke McDonald, it’s no different.
North Melbourne’s number 11 will feature in his 100th match on Saturday night against Adelaide, sparking a light-hearted rivalry with his dad, Donald.
"I’m very proud and excited to play 100 games,” McDonald told North Media.
“In my mind I’ve always had a small target of beating my old man’s 155, but 55 games is still a long way away.
“He’s sitting pretty at the moment, but hopefully I can catch him.”
Drafted by North with pick eight in the 2013 National Draft, McDonald is proud of the milestone, but is dreaming bigger.
“100 games is not something I thought about when I first got drafted, but it’s always been the dream to play in a good side and win a flag,” he said.
The defender has had a small taste of September football throughout his six seasons in the competition, playing in North’s 2014, 2015 and 2016 finals’ campaigns.
“The moments that stick out are winning those finals, especially finals on the ‘G, without a doubt, because that’s what it’s all about,” McDonald said.
“That’s what I want to aspire towards over the next couple of years.”
Playing the majority of his football as a defender, McDonald has ventured through the middle of the ground in recent years, but simply hopes to continually refine his game in the seasons to come.
“Everyone always says when they do their retirement speeches about how fast the time goes, but there’s no doubt that when I was thinking back during the week about my time, it’s gone so fast,” he added.
“It makes you want to make more of an impact over your next 100. I just want to keep improving and keep getting better to get my game to a higher echelon.
“I’ve just got to work hard and the rest will take care of itself.”
