As a fellow key-forward, Drew Petrie wants nothing more than to see Jonathan Brown go around for another season.

But after another sickening head-knock left the Brisbane captain concussed on Saturday night, the North vice-captain says it’s time to put safety first.

“At what point do you put your health ahead (of football)?” Petrie said on the AFL Exchange Podcast.

“He didn’t look well again. You couldn’t imagine he’d play this week, he’d be questionable the week after just given he’s received numerous concussions, numerous head-knocks.

“If he doesn’t play for the next two weeks, is he going to saddle up? Is it worth saddling up again?”

Brown told The Courier Mail he’d like to play again, but his coach Justin Leppitsch said he owed the club nothing and would support his former team-mate if he chose to retire.

The decision ultimately sits with the man himself.

“It’d be a difficult situation. Retirement is going to get us all and to have to say those words that you’re done would be very, very hard. I’d hate to put myself in his shoes,” Petrie added.

“It’s looking for his own safety, his own wellbeing down the track that an incident like this might have just been the straw.

“It’s a sad thing. He’s a champion but the situation probably suggests it’s probably the best course of action.”
