Skipper Andrew Swallow is North’s most important player this season, according to club legend Mick Martyn.

The two-time premiership player and dual Syd Barker medallist is confident the 27-year-old can overcome the Achilles injury that delayed his 2014 campaign and become a "workhorse" midfielder.

But in order to elevate his game to the next level, Martyn said he wants to see Swallow emulate the feats of Geelong captain Joel Selwood.

"I’d like to see him (Swallow) come off with more cut eyes and split lips or blood noses like Selwood because that lifts the whole team," Martyn told NMFC.com.au in a past player survey.

"That’s what’s going to happen, you get a player like that who’s leading the way and he just lifts time and time again for Geelong."

Martyn, who played a total of 300 games (287 for North and 13 for Carlton), said the signing of his former teammate Jarrad Waite is a “great pick-up” and could pay dividends.

"I played with ‘Waitey’ for one year in 2003 and he was only a kid and I was 35 (years old) and we did a few drills together," he said.

"If you get 15 games out of him and he’s pretty reasonable body-wise, he’s still going to end up kicking about an average of three or four goals a game."
