AFL Fantasy is back for another year, and the team at Footy Prophet will again be supplying NMFC.com.au with premium fantasy analysis and tips for the 2016 season.
Drew Petrie is set to celebrate his 300th game this week when North Melbourne take on St Kilda; the fixture is a good omen as he was North's biggest fantasy scorer last time these two sides met.
On that day at Blundstone Arena in August last year, Petrie kicked four goals and took eight marks, finishing with a fantasy score of 105 as North ran away with a 37-point win.
This week we celebrate the career of Petrie and while he has never really been a stand out fantasy option, he has provided stable and steady service in our fantasy forward line for almost a decade.
He has put up a fantasy average of 70 or better in nine of his last ten seasons with his injury-wrecked 2010 being the only outlier. He averaged more than 80 for five of six years between 2008 and 2013, with a career-best average of 87 in 2011.
20,848 career fantasy points is a huge achievement by any standard and Petrie will continue to add to that total.
This week he could be set for a big score when he comes up against a St Kilda backline that last week conceded seven goals to Melbourne’s Jesse Hogan.
There is the potential for key-forwards like Petrie and of course Jarrad Waite and Ben Brown to perform strongly against this backline, so look to them for scores so long as North’s midfield can provide the ball.
Speaking of the midfield, Andrew Swallow had his best score of the year last week against the Bulldogs with 107 points coming from 23 disposals and 14 tackles.
Also on the list to watch is Todd Goldstein who had a quiet fantasy night against the Bulldogs, but rarely has two such games in a row. This week he comes up against the relatively inexperienced Tom Hickey.
North has a few potential inclusions for the week as well – from a fantasy perspective, the one to keep an eye on will be Aaron Mullett, who has shown some fantasy ability in the past and will be at a very low price if named in the final squad.
