Defender Jamie Macmillan is confident the club’s new recruits will slide seamlessly into the North Melbourne team throughout the JLT Community Series and into Round 1.
With a dozen recruits joining Arden Street throughout the off-season, it could understandably take time to gel. But after regular match simulation and plenty of time together as a group, the new-look squad is ready to go.
“The guys have fitted in really well, and to be honest, a lot of them have got some really good AFL experience,” Macmillan told North Media.
“They’re picking everything up pretty quickly, so it’ll just be another chance for them to consolidate what they’ve already learnt.”
While the likes of Jared Polec, Jasper Pittard, Dom Tyson, Aaron Hall and Tom Campbell have wasted no time making an impact at Arden Street, actual games can be a new challenge in itself.
“We just want to build synergy in the two JLT matches, and give our new guys another run against an opposition team,” Macmillan said.
“We want to play our brand of footy, and give them the chance to get used to our offensive and defence.”
North takes on St Kilda in its opening pre-season fixture, on March 2. It’s the first chance many fans will get to see several new recruits in action.
“I suppose it’s everyone’s responsibility to make the new guys feel as comfortable as they can to let them play their role and play their natural game,” Macmillan said.
“If guys can come in and not have to worry about the little bits and pieces and just play freely, that’s when they’ll play their best.”
Although the midfield is expected to see the greatest change this year, the defensive setup is also an intriguing one.
With Scott Thompson suspended for Round 1, Sam Durdin ruled out for approximately ten weeks and Robbie Tarrant fighting to be fit for March 24 clash against Fremantle, there are potential spots up for grabs.
Despite the vacancies, Macmillan believes whoever comes in will be able to play their role.
“There will be a few new faces in the backline here and there throughout the year,” he added.
“We’ve got Rhyce Shaw on board now as our defensive coach who has added his own theories and is really encouraging us to play to our strengths as well, which has been really good.
“He’s brought a breath of fresh air and the guys are really enjoying it.”
