Sydney Swans midfielder Tom Mitchell has requested a trade to Hawthorn.
The Swans announced on Monday afternoon Mitchell had informed them of his desire to join Hawthorn before the close of the trade period next Thursday.
"We learnt of Tom's preference today, so now we will discuss as a list management team what the next steps look like," Swans football chief Tom Harley said.
Mitchell's future has been clouded since he suddenly put contract talks with the Swans on hold in late June.
Hawthorn emerged as a serious suitor for the 23-year-old shortly afterwards and is understood to have a long-term deal in front of Mitchell that is significantly more lucrative than the Swans' offer.
It is believed Mitchell also had discussions with Gold Coast two months ago before settling on Hawthorn as his preferred destination.
Hawthorn looks set to unveil a new-look midfield next season, with injury-plagued Gold Coast youngster Jaeger O'Meara also seeking a trade to Waverley.
With Mitchell and O'Meara both highly rated players, Hawthorn list manager Graham Wright and his team will have their work cut out securing trades for both.
Hawthorn received more good news on Monday when Richmond indicated it would not match the Hawks' two-year offer for restricted free agent Tyrone Vickery, with the forward/ruckman now moving to Waverley without any need for a trade.
Recruited as a father-son selection in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft at pick No.21 overall, Mitchell has played 65 games for the Swans, including all 26 matches this year.
He averaged 27.9 possessions a game this season and was one of the Swans' best players in their Grand Final loss to the Western Bulldogs, finishing with 26 possessions and two goals.
Mitchell finished eighth in the Swans' best and fairest count on Thursday night following a ninth-place finish in 2015.
