It’s a gift most AFL hopefuls could only dream of, and for birthday boy Gordon Narrier it was very much a surprise.

Drafted with the Roos’ second rookie selection on Monday evening, the 19-year-old heard the exciting news from his mates.

“I was actually out getting some food and didn’t even realise it had happened until I got home,” Narrier told NMFC.com.au.

“[I] got a couple of phone calls from friends and family saying congratulations and I checked the AFL app and saw my name there at number 20.

“I was pretty surprised, but excited and I was happy … very happy that it happened.”

Known for his amazing pace, ‘Flash’ is confident the transition to Arden Street will be made smoother after his time at Perth Demons in the WAFL.

“I think playing in senior footy in the WAFL has really helped me develop as a player and I think it’s made me pretty ready to be a part of this AFL organisation and be ready to impact as much as I can once I get a shot,” Narrier said.

“I’ve got good skills, and a pretty good left foot on me I think and I’ve got good awareness about where the game is and reading the game.

“I think I’ll be able to bring that and I guess some good forward pressure and hopefully some goal kicking as well.”

Already catching the eye of fans with an impressive highlight reel, the youngster is itching to get stuck into training.

“It’s been a pretty quick transition but I’m happy to be here. I’m excited to get into training and meet all the boys and start work at North … looking forward to it.”
