North Melbourne was one of 11 clubs to break its record membership tally in 2016, with a year-on-year increase of 9.76% by the official deadline on July 31.
The Roos added over 4,000 members to their 2015 tally, among the top six clubs in terms of member increase.
In all, 45,014 members signed up by the AFL's deadline, an amazing tally when you consider just nine years ago the figure was just over 22,000.
AFL club membership increased to a record 875,197 members in 2016, a rise of 4.67% on figures from the previous year.
AFL CEO McLachlan said the result was testament to the loyalty and passion of football fans.
“To reach a record for AFL club membership with a rate of retention across the industry of 86% is a tremendous result,” McLachlan said.
“The total number of AFL club members equates to one in every 28 Australians, which is a sign of the reach and strength of Australian football.
“The financial and emotional commitment fans make to their teams is the key reason why our game continues to prosper.”
North Melbourne has enjoyed increases in its membership tally for each of the past six seasons, and surpassed the 45,000 mark for the first time in its history in 2016.
“All clubs are to be commended for their work in improving the fan experience, engaging new audiences and strengthening ties with existing members,” McLachlan added.
“AFL clubs continue to find innovative ways to engage their members and ensure each member feels part of the club.”
